LA PANAMERICANA » Day 41

Machu Picchu

Lima - Peru » Alt. 25m
Lima não me desapontou.

Lima - Peru » Alt. 25m
We took a very early bus to Machu Picchu, and arrived there at the break of dawn. Went up the ruins and saw the sunrise from there. An amazing line dividing shadow and sunlight, slowly scanning every corner of that wonderful site. From where we were standing, we could fully contemplate Machu Picchu's most celebrated view. A true wonder of the world.
Machu Picchu is the most appealing and mysterious of all Inca remains. I'm not going to bore anyone with a deep introduction to it, even though my fascination and knowledge about it grew immensely. It's absolutely mystical and the scenery it's set against, is a testimony to what Man and Nature can do, when combined at their most brilliant. The trek there alone is worth crossing half the world. Still, my strongest memory was the deep silence it drew me to. There's an incredible peace of mind there, as you are slowly stripped of all that you left behind, and drawn into a reflection about one's self.
Ahead of Machu Picchu (old "meuntain") rises Huayna Picchu (young "meuntain"). An egg shaped rock cliff rising 360m above Machu. The idea of looking down to the ruins overcame the state of calamity my legs were at, as for an hour I went up the narrow and sometimes insane path leading to the top. Once up there, the view was just crushing. It feels like being above the top... in every sense.
One of those excruciatingly slow paced trains took us back to Cuzco that night. From there a flight to Lima. I left Cuzco with the bitter taste of the end. I knew it was the end of the great Journey that saw us crossing mountains and deserts, paths and people.
Lima was not a disappointment. I had no great expectations, although the sight of the endless Pacific is like a breathe of fresh air, and we ended up having some great meals! My flu got the best of me at this point and I didn't have much fun. Still, one of the things I knew we would miss was fighting for a price. The best example of us mastering this art, was at the airport, when we were able to hustle an initial taxi fare of 49.30 soles down to 10. Kwame in particular was the guru! Not for the money, but for the fun of it.
La Panamericana is coming to an end. But there's some Lima left. And with it, one last breathe of my blog shaped memories...

Welcome to my ongoing diary of thoughts and projects.
Here I sketch the storyboard of 2 characters, trapped in my body and linked to the world through my senses. They control my brain in a constant search for life waves, the eternal energy that feeds their souls.
Gummavitta is the explorer, the architect and the scientist. He searches the hemispheres of the earth, the mind and the human condition.
Mummagumma is the traveler, the painter and the dancer who collects Gummavitta´s experiences and memories and applies them to achieve connections. Connections with himself, which means you and I, us and them.
